More Information About U.S. Imaging

A referral is required from an Ontario physician for MRIs and CT & PET scans (often used to investigate knees, hips, back or neck problems, rule out cancers or tumours, mammography (breast scan) and other imaging services.)

These scans can usually be arranged in Buffalo, New York within a few days for MRI & CT or within a week for a PET. Results of your test are usually available to your doctor within 48 hours.

For many waiting for these procedures in Ontario, this alternative will provide a faster solution. As some Ontario patients access this US service, other Canadians will be able to have their procedure sooner in Ontario.

Payment for the procedures is made directly by the patient to the imaging facility. Payment is the responsibility of the patient and there is no assurance that the cost of these tests will be reimbursed by the Ontario Hospitalization Insurance Plan (OHIP). We do provide you with the OHIP reimbursement claim form.

The cost of other scans and services depends on the physical area being investigated by the scan and whether certain dyes or other diagnostic tools are required.
